A glowing writeup on why Prince William’s girlfriend Kate Middleton will make an ideal bride.  Interviews with royal editors included.

Kate Middleton - the ideal princess?

Kate Middleton - the ideal princess?

She has waited patiently, hardly uttered a word out of place and relies on her middle-class background to keep her feet on the ground. So has Kate Middleton, William’s potential bride, become the model of a 21st century Princess?

“I personally think Kate’s been fantastic,” says Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty magazine. “She hasn’t put a foot wrong. Prince Edward and Sophie waited for almost eight years before they got married and the Queen rather favours these long liaisons. Then they have a real feel of what it’s like to be a member of the Royal Family. And one thing that the Queen couldn’t bear would be if William made a mistake. Thankfully, Kate knows William better than anyone.”

Indeed, when Kate and William were students at St Andrews University, it was Kate who persuaded William to stay on when he was struggling to adjust and almost quit. In their second year they shared a house along with two other students and while they were still not dating in the early days (Kate was going out with fellow student Rupert Finch) they lived side by side.

According to royal biographer Penny Junor, their relationship would have benefited as a result. “They saw each other under every possible circumstance, feeling lousy, feeling grumpy, flu-ridden. It’s a good basis for a marriage.”

But the fact is that marriage has hardly come hot on the heels of Wills’ and Kate’s student days and while Prince William has been carving out a forces career, Kate has been left in the background, something that could have potentially backfired on her.

Not so, says royal author Hugo Vickers: “She’s had to wait a long time but she’s hung in there very well. She’s really the ideal woman for William. She’s very elegant and very poised as well as being very bright and you can’t imagine that she would be caught out in the same way that Sophie Wessex once was with some compromising photos.”

Royal commentator Richard Compton Miller agrees. “She has been incredibly discreet. She hasn’t given any interviews and she’s never said anything that’s brought the crown into disrepute. She’s never even worn anything outrageous. If you compare her to Chelsy Davy, she’s played her cards rather better”

According to Daily Express royal editor Richard Palmer, where Kate might be at fault is in being over-cautious.  One of the areas in which Kate has been most cautious is on the job front. Her main employment may be taking pictures for Party Pieces, her parents’ mail-order party supplies company, but this has struck some as falling short of a full-time career.

Richard Palmers says: “I call her Cautious Kate because she has played this waiting game and seems petrified of putting a foot wrong.”

“I do find her lack of a career rather reprehensible and that’s one valid criticism,” says Compton Miller. “With her art history background I’m surprised she hasn’t worked for Christie’s or Sotheby’s.”

But, counters Seward: “I don’t see how she could have a job. When she started working at the high street shop Jigsaw she was hounded by photographers in the most unpleasant fashion. And look what happened to Sophie Wessex. She had a career and it was a disaster.”
