A quiet first 2 years for William & Kate
Duncan Larcombe’s article, which confirms previous reports that Prince William will mainly focus on being an RAF pilot until 2013, giving his new wife plenty of time to transition into Royal life. Good for them! As Tom Bradby said, private domestic happiness is what they want most. Note that this doesn’t mean they won’t do official duties. They will, as Palace spokespersons have stated many times, when William’s RAF commitments allow.
The Queen has told Prince William and Kate Middleton they can stay out of the spotlight for the first two years of their marriage. William will be allowed to focus on his RAF career rather than worry about performing full-time public duties.
Her Majesty is determined that Kate will have time and space to adjust to royal life. She fears thrusting Kate into the public gaze too soon could damage the marriage.
A palace source said: “This is the best wedding present William could have hoped for. The Queen knows there is enormous pressure when the heir to the throne first marries.” It means Wills will see out his posting as a search and rescue helicopter pilot based in Anglesey, North Wales. He and Kate will take on a string of overseas tours but apart from that, Kate will be a normal housewife.
Her Majesty herself spent the first 18 months of her marriage to Prince Philip in Malta, where he was a naval officer.

William & Kate Swamped with Wedding Gifts
Palace staff are begging firms to halt the tide of cake samples and souvenirs already pouring in for the royal wedding. Tens of thousands of packages, plus cards and gifts from devoted fans, are piling up in several rooms at St James’s Palace. The royals even had to take on extra staff to deal with deluge.
A palace source said: “Kate and William are immensely flattered, and want to reply to everyone. But everything received from a commercial company has to be sent back with a note saying it can’t be accepted.”
Gifts already received include the offer of a luxury honeymoon in South Africa, as well as kettles, toasters and tea towels.

I love that everyone (in the BRF, at least) is focused on the actual marriage. Above and beyond all else, this wedding is about being the start of an actual marriage that is expected to last forever. The stronger the marriage, the better this couple will be in the long term. Congrats to them.

Well said, Kristen. The Royal Family, indeed, has learned from lessons of the past. This is wonderful news for William and Kate.

For all the attention and interest generated by the royals, it must be, in reality, a very difficult life. Imagine your mother telling you (a fully grown adult) when you need to become a more public figure and when you need to chill? There is something odd about that whole concept.
