Kate Middleton Attends Lunch with the Queen

**Updated with video** Royal bride-to-be Kate Middleton joined her fiance for a special pre-Christmas lunch with Queen Elizabeth and the extended Royal Family Thursday.

She and Prince William were driven the short hop from St. James’s Palace to Buckingham Palace for the annual event that takes place before the Queen heads off for her seasonal holiday.

The newly engaged couple rode in a car with some protection officers that traveled behind Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. Inside the palace, Kate, mingled with a daunting array of royals, as all of the Queen’s children were in attendance, along with most of her grandchildren. This is thought to be the first time she has had a lunch with the entire family at the palace.

Kate and William left about two and a half hours later – and this time, she was sandwiched between William and his brother Prince Harry in the back seat of an official SUV.

“It’s a momentous day for her,” royals author Judy Wade tells PEOPLE. “She must have met more than 40 members of the royal family and that must have been an ordeal for her to meet so many family members.”

When she left, Kate was looking supremely happy. She was smiling broadly,” observers say. “She was beaming.”

What Kate is Really like (by old friend Jessica Hay)

Kate’s roommate from Marlborough writes about the “real Kate”…

The future queen of England may have been known in the tabloids as “Waity Katie,” but for the people who know her, she’s best  described as “Matey Katie,” for the simple reason that she is just that – a very good mate. I know that as she helped me many a time with my math homework, and she can do a great rendition of “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston before bedtime.

With Catherine, what you see is what you get: She is her own person, speaks her mind, and is as beautiful inside as she is outside. She comes from a very normal and close family, so even though her world will completely change when she marries William, she has the kind of down-to-earth attitude that will carry her through with ease.

Wills and Catherine are polar opposites in terms of where they come from, but there is no mistaking their closeness. They are a normal couple. They laugh nonstop, and that is their secret. Catherine always says, “Why be serious when life is so short?”

How to Get Kate Middleton’s Engagement Picture Wardrobe

Photograph by Mario Testino

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s official engagement portraits by Mario Testino are the talk of the town.  See both pictures, including the informal “cuddling” one.  It has also been known that Kate shunned designer clothes and instead wore outfits from high street retailers for the photoshoot.  So the next question is:  where do you get them?

Kate reportedly raided her old wardrobe, and unfortunately, none of the outfits are available for purchase at the moment.  But patience is a virtue…

For the formal picture (left), Kate wore a white Nanette dress paired with a belt from Reiss.  A similar version will be available in Reiss by the end of January 2011 for £159.

For the cuddle picture, Kate wore a £95 cream, silk embroidered blouse from Whistles from the 2008 autumn/winter collection.  Due to popular demand, Whistles’ CEO announced that they will be re-releasing the ‘Kate’ blouse as a limited edition in early 2011.

Kate wore £275.00 Hope Egg earrings from Links of London to complete the look.

Airbrushed! The official engagement portraits were digitally touched up by the photographer Mario Testino before they were released by St James’s Palace, insiders have said. “There was a minimal amount of airbrushing done. The final portraits amount to a piece of art, rather like the official paintings that would have been done in previous generations, and so they were touched up a little to get them just right.”

The source insisted nothing had been done to alter the couple’s appearance, such as thickening the Prince’s hair, with changes “more likely to have been increasing the contrast between their clothes and the background colours”. Article: The Telegraph

The Sun’s royal photographer Arthur Edwards comments. Arthur has photographed Prince William since he was a baby.  He casts his expert eye on royal engagement photos over the years and calls William and Kate’s informal “cuddle” photo as the portrait of the 21st century as far as the royals are concerned.  Article: The Sun

Kate’s Engagement Ring Replica from China for only £2

Factories in China are gearing up for a boom in Royal Wedding souvenirs – including versions of Kate Middleton’s engagement ring with plastic diamonds.  As soon as local jewellery dealer Fu Xuxian from Yiwu in China heard of Prince William’s engagement to Kate, he smelled a business opportunity.

Within days he had begun making and exporting replicas of the engagement ring.  The original ring was made by Garrard – crown jewellers since 1843 – and is valued at several hundred thousand pounds.  Fu’s mass-produced version, which retails for just £2, is cast from bronze and set with plastic stones.

His factory also sells Royal Wedding souvenirs, including mugs, fluffy “William and Kate” toys, and a set of feathered hair ornaments inspired by the style of Miss Middleton.
