Prince Harry will fly to Norway on Monday to join four badly injured Afghan war veterans who are attempting to walk to the North Pole. Harry is expected to spend 10 days with the team, including a week on their trek across the pack ice once they set out on April 1, far longer than originally planned. He will cover around 70 miles of the 200-mile journey. The prince will pull a 150kg sled loaded with all the equipment he needs to survive in temperatures that could fall to minus 60 with the wind chill factor. It includes an immersion survival suit if they are forced to cross open water.

Royal Wedding News: 2 Cakes!

We count down to Prince William & Kate Middleton’s big day on April 29.   The latest big update is about the royal wedding cakes. There will be two — a traditional multi-tiered fruitcake in floral design, and a tea biscuit dark chocolate cake once a favourite of William.

The official wedding cake, to be the centerpiece of the Buckingham Palace reception, is to be made by Fiona Cairns. She has met Kate Middleton 6 weeks ago to discuss the details. Kate has been instrumental in the design and had a strong idea of what she wanted, Fiona says. The cake will be decorated with William and Kate’s new cipher – thought to feature the couple’s entwined initials – which will be officially released on their wedding day. Another theme will be the four flowers of the home nations – English rose, Scottish thistle, Welsh daffodil and Irish shamrock. Kate has also asked to feature around 16 different blooms and foliage for their meaning – known as the “language of flowers,” and to incorporate elements from the Joseph Lambeth technique of cake decoration, where intricate piping is used to make three dimensional scroll work, leaves, flowers and other adornments.

As for the other cake, William has asked McVitie’s to create one of his favourite sweet treats that will provide an alternative to the official wedding cake by Fiona Cairns. As a young boy the Prince used to enjoy the cake, which is made from crushed rich tea biscuits and dark chocolate. It will be an unbaked cake.

Savannah Phillips, the Queen’s First Great-Grandchild

The Queen’s first great-grandchild has been named Savannah. The baby girl, who is 12th in line to the throne, was born on December 29 to the Queen’s grandson Peter Phillips and his Canadian wife Autumn. Although her name had not been officially yet, it was revealed at a church service yesterday at the Royal estate of Sandringham, Norfolk, attended by the Royal family.

Rector of Sandringham the Reverend Jonathan Riviere made a mention in a prayer for “Peter and Autumn Phillips and their daughter Savannah.”

It was the first time the name had been used in public. The name is rare in the UK and is thought to have no special meaning beyond what it signifies when describing the landscape – an open plain.

In the same church service, Princess Anne vowed not to spoil her first grandchild.

Outside, Mary Relph, from nearby Shouldham, said: “I congratulated her and said that I thought she would be spoilt, but Princess Anne said the baby wouldn’t be spoilt by her.”

Harry, the Prince of Darts

A smiling Prince Harry stuns fans by turning up to watch the World Darts Championships last night.

The 26-year-old royal – on a break from military duties – sat in the VIP area with pals including ex-England rugby union star Will Greenwood, 38. Harry stayed off the booze but he did go to the bar and returned with a round of lagers in plastic cups for his mates.

The Prince sneaked into Alexandra Palace, North London, when the lights were down. After Lewis beat Mark Webster to win a place in the grand final tonight, Prince Harry broke royal protocol and went up to congratulate him with a hug.

It appears like Harry remained in the UK for the entire holiday season, squashing rumours that he would spend part of it in South Africa with ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy.

The Queen Welcomes First Great-Grandchild

CONGRATULATIONS! A new generation of royals has begun!

Autumn Phillips, wife of the Queen’s grandson Peter Phillips, gave birth to a baby daughter on Wednesday, December 29, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The newborn, who is 12th in line to the throne, is the Queen’s first great-grandchild. Yet unnamed, the baby weighed 8 lbs 8 oz. Father Peter was present at the birth in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

Mother any baby are doing fine. “The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, Captain Mark Phillips and Autumn’s family have been informed and are delighted with the news.”

Peter Phillips, son of Princess Anne and the Queen’s eldest grandson, met his wife while working at the Montreal Grand Prix in 2003. They were married at Windsor Castle in May 2008.

Strike Threats and Security Plans for Royal Wedding

Union bosses have threatened a series of coordinated strikes in late spring to coincide with the royal wedding. They intend to bring workers out on strike at the end of April, when the eyes of the world will be on Britain for Prince ­William’s wedding to Kate Middleton on April 29.

Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union, which represents 300,000 civil servants, said: “Strikes are inevitable. We are looking at the spring. Unless you look like you want a fight, they won’t negotiate. The Government has to see we are serious. Actions around Easter have quite an effect because so much is happening at that time of year. The end of April, beginning of May would be best. The royal wedding would not be a factor in our planning but nor would it be a factor to avoid.”

Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that SAS snipers have been drafted to safeguard the wedding day.

SAS snipers will go undercover in a major counter-terror clampdown on the streets. The elite soldiers will join Afghan war veterans from the Special Reconnaissance Regiment to spot potential attacks and safeguard the big day.

Working alongside police officers, they will blend in with the crowds and man fixed observation posts on roofs and mobile units hidden in unmarked cars and vans. The experts will also identify vulnerable points along the wedding procession route, which is expected to attract tens of thousands of well-wishers.

William & Kate's Wedding: 2011, 2012 or later? Ever?

Another weekend, another wedding date speculation for Prince William and his long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton.  Now it’s spring 2012.  Can’t say this is any more credible than previous speculations, even with the claimed source having once correctly revealed Charles and Camilla’s wedding…

Prince William will end the marathon wait for Kate Middleton – by making her his bride in 2012 just before the London Olympics. The News of the World reveals they will marry in the spring – just ahead of his 30th birthday in June.

The couple want their big day around the time when the world’s spotlight is on London – for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June and the Games which start July 27. Secret plans are being drawn up for the nuptials to fit in with both major events.

A senior insider said: “William and Kate are both aware a royal wedding followed by the jubilee celebrations and the Olympics will really put Britain on the map again.This will be a landmark occasion. The Chinese may have put on a great show for the last Olympics but nobody can do royal pomp like we can. It will be spectacular.”

“There is no doubt that Kate is the right girl for William. Their future together is sealed. The powers that be, and I mean right to the top, see this as the perfect opportunity to secure the monarchy at the heart of the people at a time when the media focus is on our country.”

The Queen is said to be in favour of a 2012 ceremony. She feels it would enhance her jubilee celebrations rather than undermine them. But she would prefer a smaller royal wedding at St George’s Chapel, rather than an “all singing all dancing” bash like Charles and Diana who wed at St Paul’s Cathedral in 1981.

William to be Godfather to Peter and Autumn’s Baby

Prince William has been asked to be godfather to his royal cousin Peter Phillips’ baby. Peter, 32, and wife Autumn are expecting their first child in December, with the christening due in March. The tot, who will be the Queen’s first great-grandchild, is to be baptised in a private ceremony in one of the Royal Family’s chapels.

One family friend confirmed: “William was delighted to be asked because he and Peter are great mates. They grew up together and even though Peter and Autumn live in Hong Kong now, they’re still very close.”

Meanwhile, Kate seems to be facing an even longer wait for her own day in church. Aides have privately dismissed talk of a ceremony at Westminster Abbey in the second week of August next year. One revealed: “That date comes at the beginning of the Queen’s holiday on the Balmoral estate in Scotland. She would never break that for a wedding and no one in her family in their right mind would dream of planning one then.”

The second day of the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park saw lots of support for royal equestrian Zara Phillips.  Along with brother Peter and his pregnant wife Autumn, cousin Prince William also made an appearance.   Below are links to adorable cousin-ly banter and compassion.  Prince William also appears to have an iPhone!… and was apparently updating his address book.
