According to several informed sources, the potential future King and Queen of England got engaged on the 20th of October at Rutundu, a remote spot 10,200 feet (3,100 meters) above sea-level on the slopes of Mount Kenya, Africa’s second highest peak. Far from the opulence of the Royal residences back home, the cabin does not even have electricity and guests are advised to bring all their own food and drink.

“They came to relax and to fish,” one of Rutundu’s guides said. The couple drove up from Lewa Downs (some say William rented a helicopter and flew Kate there himself), the wildlife reserve where they have holidayed in the past and where Prince William spent part of his gap year before attending the University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland.

After settling in, they went fishing for rainbow trout in Lake Rutundu. They failed to hook one. But later, in the evening, William made the catch of his life when Kate said Yes to his proposal of marriage. William is said to have asked Kate to be his wife on the veranda of their cabin.  The pair then enjoyed a bottle of champagne – kept cool in the outdoor ‘fridge’ – a wooden cupboard, before tucking into a meal prepared by the resort staff. Before retiring to their four-poster bed, the pair are said to have snuggled happily in front of a roaring fire.

“I think Kenya has always been very close to Prince William’s heart. He’s been coming here for many years. He loves it. I think he wanted to share Kenya with his new bride, unknown to us at the time,” Ian Craig, founder of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

Below we see the hut where William popped the question. A visitor’s book, with an entry from both William and Kate is unveiled. See their handwriting!

Interview with Ian Craig, Jecca Craig’s dad and founder of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, where William and Kate stayed in Kenya.  He claims he didn’t know about the engagement then, but have plenty of good things to say about the couple.
