Prince William’s bride-to-be has been compared numerous times with his late mum. (Too much, actually, in my opinion). Many have pointed their similarities, but this article, inspired by book William & Kate: A Royal Love Story, points out a big difference between Kate Middleton and Princess Diana. Christopher Andersen is the author of book, which is now available in Canada. He has appeared in numerous talk shows promoting this. I haven’t read it (no plans to), as it sounds like a collection of tabloid gossip of the couple over the years. Anyhow…
The contrast between calm, strategic Kate and her now-fiance’s late, loose-cannon mother Diana is a central theme of the new biography. We sense that William turns with relief to this placid daughter of a successful mail-order party-supply-business couple. Once divorced, the Princess of Wales shared with her older son in excruciating detail the stormy vicissitudes of her love affairs.
Diana remained bitter because Prince Charles had married her without ditching his longtime girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles.
Quiet Kate could only benefit in comparison. The Queen and Prince Philip instantly liked her. Whereas Diana had shunned the family’s enthusiasm for “killing things,” Kate dutifully followed Wills around the woods of Balmoral carrying all the dead pheasants he’d shot. Elizabeth denied rumours that she’d looked with disapproval on Kate’s gum-chomping mother: “chew gum myself!”

I can’t believe you have a countdown to the second of the wedding! Don’t you think that’s a little much britishroyal?

I have read Andersen’s book. It’s enjoyable but does strike me as gossip and definitely sensationalised. Many of the stories I have heard before from gossip rags years ago.
P.S. I happen to love the countdown, Dash! Good job. Can’t believe it’s less than 100 days now.

@Dharmi: Agree about Andersen’s book. Too tabloid-ish, and definitely a rehash of old, unproven gossip.
@Sam: Not too much at all. Plenty of other websites do the same. Most plug-in scripts running on WordPress count down to the last second, which is why it ended up this way.

The comparison’s to Diana don’t bother me that much, it’s when they say that Kate is better than Diana when my blood boils. Whereas people call Kate “strategic”, they call Diana “manipulative”.
This article is sick. Diana defended her morals and opposed killing animals, and Kate goes along with it to please her boyfriend and in-laws. Diana was miserable and escaped her situation, which is what any sane person would do.
“Loose cannon” my arse. She was an independent and courageous woman who didn’t let anyone control her life. That is why she was so loved.
If you like Kate, that’s your deal. But don’t insult Diana by claiming that Kate is somehow better than her in any way.

The reviewer of this book used rough terms to describe the late Princess of Wales. I would think ‘insecure’ and ‘desperate’ are more accurate describing her ‘crying for help’ moments. I loved Diana, but she wasn’t without faults. The Panorama interview aside, I still can’t believe she hurled herself down the stairs when pregnant with William just to get Charles’ attention. But she was a very real and very wonderful princess. Ironically, Kate has much to thank her for, as they’ve clearly learned from the lessons of the past. Kate should have a much better transition and I hope she does.

Yes, Diana was fallable, and that confirms only one thing: she was a human being.
Also, what’s wrong with the Panorama interview? Charles can give a 2 hour interview confessing to adultery but Diana can’t? What’s with the hypocracy and double standards?

The Panorama interview was what triggered the Queen to ask for a divorce after years of marital unrest. It was more revealing than Charles’ Dimbleby interview, as it not only admitted to her personal adultery, but hinted on Charles’ jealousy, that he’s unfit to be king, that the grey men were out to destroy her, etc. The Panorama interview doesn’t bother me, actually. Diana answered the questions subtly, honestly and rather well. If anything, it’s the “secret tapes” acquired by NBC in the later years that are the most damaging to the monarchy.
