During last minute lobbying in Zurich, FIFA official Jack Warner put his arm around Prince William’s shoulder and assured him: “You have my vote. “ The FIFA vice-president also promised the Prince and David Cameron to bring two more votes with him.
But he is understood to be one of five delegates who lied to William and the Prime Minister over where they would place their crucial support.The blatant duplicity explains Downing Street’s fury at FIFA and why Prince William was ‘furious’ at the betrayal.
The Prince and the Prime Minister, alongside David Beckham, had spent a frantic 48 hours lobbying delegates to bring the 2018 World Cup back to Britain.
Mr Cameron said he met William coming out of one meeting with a delegate and asked how it had gone. The Prime Minister said: “He said it had gone really, really well. I said: ” Gosh, how did you do it? What did you offer him, an invitation to the wedding?”
‘He said: “Prime Minister, I went so far I think I offered to marry him”.’
The 2018 World Cup was ultimately awarded to Russia.
