Prince William’s Africa

It’s Prince William’s love of Africa that provides the theme for the exclusive one-off documentary, presented by Ben Fogle, with the prince traveling to Botswana on the 20th anniversary of Tusk Trust, the wildlife conservation charity.

The Prince is keen for us to see the work this organisation carries out, and which he actively supports – stressing the need to protect and preserve Africa’s wildlife and establish long-term solutions to its environmental problems. He also challenges Ben to run a fund-raising marathon in Kenya.

Prince William’s Africa airs on October 20, 8pm, on Sky1.

Still Dreaming of Afghanistan

Prince William said he is determined to fight in Afghanistan – and the reasons against it are “hyped up”.

Wills, 28, who has just passed his helicopter pilot’s course, added: “It’s just a pity I couldn’t go to Afghanistan. And there are some slightly valid arguments as to why not, but many of them were hyped up as to why I couldn’t go. I still have hope and faith and real determination to go out there.”

“I didn’t join the armed forces to be mollycoddled or treated differently to anybody else. As far as I’m concerned, if Harry can do it, I can do it. I don’t really see much difference.”

William added that he had put a “massive effort” into maintaining his military career. He said: “I love it. I love the flying. I can’t wait to do the job properly. But it’s difficult flitting between my military, my public and my private lives.”

Shows up at Party Pieces

Richard Kay reports that just the other day, William paid a visit to Party Pieces, the hugely successful online party goods business run by Kate Middleton’s parents, Carole and Michael, from near their Berkshire home.

Kate was there, too — drafted in to take snaps for a new product catalogue. But William has rarely been seen at the firm, prompting some good-natured chatter from staff there.

On the wedding front…

William to ask for Queen’s permission to marry Kate Middleton

Prince William is set to follow family tradition by asking the Queen’s permission to marry at Christmas. Royal experts believe this will be followed by an official announcement in February. It is thought he will request an audience with the Queen at either the Buckingham Palace Christmas lunch or during the holiday at Sandringham afterwards.

Wedding or not, it’s time Kate Middleton grew up

Opinion from Sandra Parsons: “At present, I fear William and Kate are in danger of becoming the world’s most boring couple.

Kate appears to have all of Diana’s glamour and none of her neediness. What she has yet to demonstrate is whether she has Diana’s genuine desire to give something back, to be seen as someone who can contribute.  At the very least, she could have been doing some charity work. If the couple really are about to become officially engaged, then she must get down to something serious. She is 28 now, after all, and about to become a role model for women not just here but all over the world — which is why I feel so uneasy about those growing doubts that she is little more than a pampered princess.

She needs now to convince us that she has what it takes to be a real one.”
