Let me start by personally saying how pleasantly surprised I was with yesterday’s announcement that at long last, Prince William and Kate Middleton are to be married. Totally SHOCKED, actually… primarily at the timing of the announcement. Year after year, we have weathered false stories and cyclic rumours about a royal wedding… and none of them happened. And while this year’s rumours were especially strong, I would have never guessed that the Palace would announce an engagement so early. I thought February at the latest. But suffice to say, we at British Royals are extremely happy for our new royal couple. Congratulations!
November 16, 2010: the day Prince William announced his engagement to Ms. Catherine Elizabeth Middleton. The couple did their first photocall at around 5:00pm in London, with their first interview (not to be missed!) airing in major networks at 7:00pm. Refer to previous posts for links and more details.

William & Kate’s Photocall in St. James Palace
Official Reactions and Statement from the Royal Family and Kate’s Parents
Today, the day after, we’re picking up the little details and follow-up stories after yesterday’s media storm.
DETAILS:
- The couple is getting married in the spring or summer of 2011
- William proposed during a holiday in Kenya in October. Further reports said he hired a helicopter to take them to a remote lake on the slopes of Mount Kenya and proposed 12,000 feet above sea level.
- William presented Kate with Princess Diana’s blue sapphire engagement ring encircled with diamonds. He had carried it in his rucksack for 3 weeks around Africa. It was the perfect fit and did not need resizing.
- Kate did not expect the proposal because they were on holiday with friends. She accepted immediately.
- William asked Kate’s father Michael for her hand after she’s said yes. They’ve kept the engagement very secret. Reports say (though I find it hard to believe) William telephoned the Queen for permission the day before the announcement, and Prince Charles himself only knew 2-3 hours before. Kate’s siblings were also informed hours before.
- The engagement announcement was delayed because Kate’s grandfather, Peter Middleton, recently died. His funeral was last week.
- The couple will live in North Wales after they marry
REVELATIONS from their FIRST INTERVIEW:
- True: They met in university and started as friends. They started dating a year after meeting.
- True: They were flatmates before they even started dating
- False: Kate did NOT have a poster of William on her wall in Marlborough. She had, instead, a Levis man
- True: They did break up briefly in 2007. It was not a stunt
- Hinted: Looks like William precipitated the breakup, as Kate mentioned she “wasn’t very happy about it” at the time
- Revealed: Kate first met the Queen during Peter Phillips wedding to Autumn Kelly
- Revealed: They have been planning to get married for over a year
- Revealed: William calls her Kate. Her parents call her Catherine. She doesn’t mind being called with either name.
How are William and Kate doing the day after the announcement?
A St James Palace spokesperson said: “They are still very much on cloud nine and are still enjoying the happy moment. They are enjoying talking to friends and family and enjoying one another’s company and showing their commitment to each other publicly.”
The couple spent part of the day discussing their marriage plans with officials and “all options are on the table”, a St James’s Palace spokesman said. Aides will now consult with the Queen, senior royals, Miss Middleton’s parents and others before reporting back to the prince and his fiancee, who will make the final decision.

I’m sure there will be many, many more to come. November 16, 2010, I believe, was truly the beginning of another era of royal-watching. For what it was worth, I thought Prince William & Kate Middleton handled the announcement and their first interview very well — with lots of ease, playful banter and enough honesty to endear themselves to the public. Kate was understandably a bit nervous and shy, and it’s great to see William help her through.

thank you for compiling so many articles in one place!
i agree with you, i find it hard to believe his and her immediate family (and the queen and p philip!) didn’t know before Tues morning or, in the queen’s case, the day before.
a friend of kate’s told matt lauer she had known for some time. i think close family and friends were told after the scotland trip when wills asked kate’s father.

Quite right, alpa. And what amuses me was that Jessica friend from the Today show also seemed to hint that she already knew the wedding date! Makes me wonder if she’s real… but she seems to deserve the benefit of a doubt, considering how discreet she was and how carefully she chose her words.

This is excellent news indeed!
“The Republic campaign has seen a surge of interest in the past 24 hours with hundreds of new supporters signing up online, both on the Republic website and on the Republic Facebook page. And this is just day one…”
“In June the Swedish royals had a big wedding, the Swedish press went as collectively mad as ours did. The Swedish republican movement had its best year yet – and on the eve of the wedding a poll came out showing support for the Swedish monarchy had dropped to 46%, the lowest in a lifetime.”
“the monarchy thrives on its lack of scrutiny, on people not giving it any serious thought. All this means that for the first time in a long time a lot of people will begin to think critically about the royal family and the monarchy – and will be continuously reminded to do so. People will be reminded of the ostentatious lifestyles, the presumption of the Windsors that they deserve state handouts, the questions about what it’s all for.”
It’s just starting my peeps!

I’m enjoying all this royal news! Thanks for keeping such an updated site. Can’t wait for the wedding date announcement and details.
I came across this article highlighting Kate Middleton’s fashion sense. It’s a fun read. I do think she has a good sense of style, with tremendous potential for improvement.

It’s looking more like Westminster Abbey! Kate Middleton is reported to have visited the venue late Wednesday:

I’m so happy the BRW site shut down! I wasn’t expecting that in a million years. They’ve also shut down their YouTube Channel! Can anyone explain why?
Why on earth would William want the happiest day of his life to take place in the same venue where the worst day of his life took place? That’s twisted logic.

Lol, bluefire, she did look ridiculously happy in that photo.
I don’t mind Westminster Abbey. It seems like a perfectly logical choice – with or without Diana’s funeral in mind.
Kate, quite suddenly surrounded by security & officials, photographed visiting the Abbey:

hello and welcome, bluefire! I’m actually quite sad to see BRW close down as they had interesting and sensible discussions there. I do hope it’s temporary.
Thanks for sharing the links, folks! I’ll try to wade through the dozens of articles to find ones to put up on the page everyday. It’s such a circus! This engagement announcement is really explosive.
And for an afterthought: I actually love the Abbey. It would be my top choice

Hello from a former BRW reader – I do hope that BRW contributor rman finds his way here as he always has interesting and informed comments. Of course, William and Catherine should marry at Westminster Abbey. Arguably, it is the ‘national’ church of Great Britain and as many other royal events take place there, most notably coronations, they will not be able to avoid the Abbey forever. Also, I have a Middle American view of churches – they are not just venues for ceremonies, but they are houses of God. We go there during the best times in our lives (wedding, baptisms, etc.) but also for the worst (funerals) to worship and give thanks to our Creator. I was privileged to be able to visit Westminster Abbey last summer, and I believe it is not only the joyful events that occurred there, but also the ones full of pain and sorrow, that give the Abbey its place of great significance in the nation’s history.

This report says Kate was with her parents during the Abbey visit.
http://tinyurl.com/2bf55da
Other reports are also saying she’s back in Berkshire with her family.
I personally think it’s wonderful that her family is involved in this and that she’s not totally detached from them now that her life has been catapulted into the spotlight. Just very happy that it looks like it won’t be as traumatic and isolating as Diana’s experience. I think it’s extremely important
KansasGirl, I sometimes post and have always been lurking in BRW, too. It’s such a shame it closed down at this time!!! I do hope some of the posters find their way here. I’m sure they’re more than welcome.
