Prince William saddened by World Cup bid loss

Prince William offered his congratulations to Russia and apologised to the supporters after England failed to win the vote for the 2018 World Cup.

England put together a strong bid to stage the tournament and the signs in Zurich in the hours leading up to the decision appeared to be positive. However, England received only two votes in the first round of voting from the 22-man Fifa executive committee as Russia were awarded the World Cup for the first time.

England looked to have suffered from a backlash against corruption investigations into Fifa members by BBC Panorama and the Sunday Times over the last two months.

Nevertheless, Football Association president Prince William expressed his pride at being involved in England’s bid and was disappointed that it ultimately proved to be unsuccessful.
