Kate Shines in First Military Role as Royal

Today is Armed Forces Day, and the royals sure made the world remembers….  Prince Charles & Camilla were in Edinburgh for the celebrations, including a Red Arrows fly past.  But of course,  all eyes were at Windsor…

Today the Duchess of Cambridge did her first military role as a member of the Royal Family. And once again, she triumphed, looking relaxed and confident as if she’s been doing it for years.

Prince William, who is Colonel of the Irish Guards, and and his new wife handed out operational medals to soldiers who have recently returned from serving in Afghanistan. In his speech, the Duke of Cambridge spoke of his pride to be the soldiers’ colonel and was humbled by the thought of their sacrifices.

“I can only imagine what the campaign medals you receive today must mean to you,” he said. “Along with thousands of others back home, I followed your tour in Afghanistan with a mounting sense of awe. Over the years and decades ahead when you look at this medal, I’m sure it will bring back so many conflicting memories. Sadness for those who did not return, and thoughts of their families who received their Elizabeth Crosses today.”

He also thanked the Irish Guards for their service on their wedding.

Prince William turns 29. What a year it has been for him!  As it was last year, William spent his 29th birthday at work yesterday.  Like  any other working week, William got no special treatment.  In fact, word has it that the newlyweds were apart, with Kate in London preparing for their overseas tour and preparing to move into their Kensington Palace cottage.  She reportedly brought in new scents to update the fuddy-duddy palace smell.  However and whenever they celebrate, we wish Prince William another joyful and memorable year ahead!

Royal Wedding Charitable Gift Fund Raises more than £1 million. To be exact, £1,058,367 has been raised and will be distributed to the 26 charities chosen by William & Kate to benefit from people’s donations in lieu of wedding presents. Most of the donations came from the official gift fund website. Read the statement here.  Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Kate writes a letter of thanks to Wimbledon officials. Back in 2008, when she was just William’s girlfriend, Kate hand-wrote a letter thanking Wimbledon chiefs of their hospitality after visiting the tennis tournament.  Read Kate’s letter here. Lovely gesture and impeccable manners!  Too bad the ever-spiteful Daily Mail chose to focus on two small spelling errors.  The letter is now up for display in a glass cabinet in the All England Club museum.

The Queen adores Kate. William’s cousin Zara Phillips gave an interview and revealed that Her Majesty “liked Kate as soon as they met,” that both she and Prince Philip “adore her” and think she’s “just right for William.”   Read Zara’s interview here.

Harry & Pippa: Captain & Commando?

Princess Beatrice

How silly does this sound?  Someone apparently told Grazia magazine that Prince Harry & Pippa Middleton have met a handful of times after the royal wedding to console each other from their breakups.  They even have nicknames for each other.  Pippa calls Harry “Captain,” referring to his army rank.  He cheekily calls her “Commando,” in reference to rumours that she didn’t wear underwear during her sister’s wedding.  The press is insinuating that this flirtation may lead to something more.  Amusing, but certainly sounds made-up.

Spotlight on the fit and slender Princess Beatrice

Princess Beatrice was spotted in a bikini three years ago with her wobbly bits hanging about.  The press had a field day splashing the unsightly pictures.  Since then, Bea started working out, joined the London marathon and watched what she ate.  Now, three years later, we have a fit and svelte princess!  Good for her!

Weekend Royal Recap

Wrapping Up Ascot 2011

The last few days at Ascot have brought some royal interest…

Carole Middleton at Ascot 2011

Day 3: On Ladies’ Day, the big news was that Kate’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, joined the royal carriage procession and were in the royal box with the Queen.  Lovely!  While the Countess of Wessex has had her father in Ascot for years, no one ever recalls Diana’s or Fergie’s parents ever invited.  Significantly, it was the Queen’s invitation, showing their welcome into the royal fold. Carole Middleton looked the epitome of elegance in a cream Catherine Walker suit and matching hat.

Day 4:  Prince Andrew spotted with a mystery brunette.  Probably nothing, but  the Duke of York spent much of the day with a brunette in an oversized hat.  He also took time to chat with an ex-flame – blonde TV presenter Catrina Skepper

Day 5: The Queen was in blue, but most of the talk surrounded Princess Eugenie, who came with a figure-hugging red dress by Alexander McQueen – almost the red version of what Pippa won during the royal wedding.  Eugenie was accompanied by her boyfriend Jack Brooksbank.  Later, she awarded the cup for the winner of the Chesham Stakes.

Royals at Garter Day, Prince Philip’s 90th

After a very happy appearance at the Trooping the Colour parade on Saturday, the royals continue their busy weekend celebrating the Duke of Edinburgh’s 90th birthday on Sunday, and participating in the Order of the Garter ceremony on Monday.

Garter Day

Each year in June a procession and service take place at Windsor Castle for the Order of the Garter. The Order is the senior and oldest British Order of Chivalry, founded by Edward III in 1348. The Queen, as Sovereign of the Order, attends the service along with other members of the Royal family in the Order, including Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward Princess Anne, and latest, Prince William — who all donned their ostrich plume caps and velvet robes.

Royals in attendance today were the spouses: Duchess of Cornwall, the Countess of Wessex, and the person everyone was waiting to see — the Duchess of Cambridge.  Kate wore a dove-grey coat with a matching fascinator.   A big smile from his wife reportedly made Prince William blush during the procession.  After the service, William and Kate joined Prince Charles and Camilla in a carriage ride back to Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip’s 90th Birthday Celebration

The Duke of Edinburgh turns 90

The Rt Rev David Conner, who gave the sermon in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, made the congregation laugh when he told them the Duke “doesn’t like to the praised”.  But he went on to insist that despite Philip not wanting to be the topic of conversation, praise was due for the royal has been a tireless supporter of the Queen and more than 800 charities.

William & Kate attend Prince Philip's 90th birthday service

Kate recycles her wardrobe. Once again, focus on the newlyweds, who arrived with Prince Harry.  What did the new Princess Catherine wear?  Recycled coat.  Recycled dress.  Recycled shoes.  Good on her!  She wore the coat in 2009 for a friends wedding, the dress on the day after her wedding, and the shoes from the recent derby.  The day before, after the Trooping the Colour parade, she and Pippa attended the wedding of friend Sam Waley-Cohen in another recycled dress.
