The Queen has led the nation in commemorating sacrifices made by Britain’s Armed Forces at the Remembrance Sunday ceremony. The monarch joined Prime Minister David Cameron and opposition party leaders at the wreath-laying event at the Cenotaph.
After two minutes’ silence, the Queen laid the first tribute. She was followed by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of York, the Earl of Wessex, the Princess Royal and the Duke of Kent.

A few hours earlier, Prince William had taken part in a similiar ceremony in Afghanistan.
Prince William, a RAF Search and Rescue helicopter pilot, was accompanied by Defence Secretary Liam Fox on his trip to Camp Bastion in the war-torn country’s Helmand Province. The main British Military base in Afghanistan was the site for their commemorations, as they remembered the individuals who fallen over the years. This is William’s second trip of Afghanistan. He previously visited in April 2008.

Somebody once said that heroes have the whole earth for their tomb. This country, perhaps more than any other, knows the wisdom of these words.
On war memorials up and down the land, on church walls and in school assembly rooms, we are reminded every day that men and women from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth have laid down their lives for freedom and the values on which our society is based.
The sacrifice they made – and continue to make – must never, ever be forgotten.
