Painted by Nicky Philipps, a new portrait shows Princes William and Harry engaged in “brotherly banter” as they pose in the Library of Clarence House. Both wear the dress uniform of the Household Cavalry. Miss Philipps was commissioned and had five sittings with the Princes beginning in August 2008. She hopes to have captured “a behind-the-scenes glance at the human element of royal responsibility”
“I didn’t want any sort of overbearing formality about it because they are still young and William hasn’t got to his role yet. They are Army officers and they are brothers. Although I was commissioned to paint them in their official context, I hope I have also captured some of the brotherly banter that characterised the sittings.”
She also found the princes – who created their own poses – “charming, and tall. They were extremely easy to work with.”
The painting will be displayed for the next six months in London’s National Portrait Gallery’s Contemporary Galleries.
