Camilla, a fan of The Archers

The Duchess of Cornwall is to grace the fictional village of Ambridge with her presence after it was announced she is to star in Radio 4’s long-running soap opera The Archers.  BBC producers went to Clarence House before Christmas to record her part in the drama.

In the episode Camilla turns up at the Grey Gables country house hotel in her role as president of the National Osteoporosis Society to speak to supporters of the charity.

The Duchess is the second member of the royal family to appear on the show, after Princess Margaret also starred in an episode back in 1984.  Camilla will appear alongside character Caroline Sterling – played by Sara Coward – who also performed alongside Princess Margaret when she made her appearance more than 25 years ago.

The ‘brief’ appearance will be aired on February 16, the same day when Her Royal Highness visits the home of the long-running serial in Birmingham, where it is usually recorded. It comes as the longest-running broadcast drama in the world celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

Actress Miss Coward said: “It was fascinating to go to Kensington Palace to record with Princess Margaret 27 years ago, and Clarence House was still more fun. The Duchess was relaxed, charming and wonderfully natural.”

A royal aide said of Camilla’s appearance: “She’s a huge fan and has been for many years. There are people out there who hang on its every storyline – the Duchess is very, very keen. And the Prince listens from time to time.  She liked the idea of celebrating their 60th anniversary and raising aware of osteoporosis, which is an issue very close to her heart.”

Insiders revealed that Camilla had enjoyed tea with the cast and production team after the recording was done.
