Jecca Craig Calls Off Engagement

Jecca & Hugh Crossley

Jecca & Hugh Crossley

Perhaps the juiciest of this weekend’s royal gossip is the fact that Jecca Craig has called off her engagement with long time boyfriend Hugh Crossley. Just as we did when Emila d’Erlanger announced her engagement, let’s get to know Jecca a bit more.

Who is Jecca?

Jessica (Jecca) Craig is a very close friend (rumoured ex-girlfriend) of Prince William.  Her family owns a wildlife reserve in Kenya where Wills spent part of his gap year helping with rhino conservation.  He and Jecca are said to have carried out a “pretend engagement” during their time together.  On Wills’ 21st birthday celebration, his Out of Africa themed party saw Jecca as guest of honor.  In 2003, St James’s Palace “denies that there is or ever has been any romantic liaison between Prince William and Jessica Craig.”

Nevertheless, Wills has remained close with Jecca.  He goes to Africa almost every year to visit her family.  In 2005, he even brought girlfriend Kate Middleton on an African holiday with Jecca as their guide.  Last year, William opted to attend Jecca’s brother’s wedding in Kenya over his own cousin Peter Phillips’.

Jecca is currently based in London and has been living with boyfriend Hugh Crossley since 2005.  In October last year, they announced their engagement.  Now, as confirmed by Jecca’s father, the engagement is off.  “There are no third parties involved.  Jecca decided she just wanted to finish her degree.” There are also rumors that the reason behind the break up is because Hugh wouldn’t want to relocate to Africa.  Hugh, appearing hopeful, says they are still “working it out.”

Old Article: Wills in the Wilderness with Kate & Jecca (2005)

Is this news significant?  Probably not.  People who are not in favor of Kate Middleton may find Jecca a suitable alternative, but I doubt that this has anything to do with William.  I personally like Jecca.  She knows how to behave and keep her mouth shut.  And she hails from a dignified family that is deeply involved in a wonderful wildlife conservation project.  So does Kate have reason to worry?  Don’t think so.  She and Jecca seem to have grown as friends.  The past few years saw them attending weddings together, whispering intimately during the Boodles Boxing Ball, sharing hello kisses during William’s birthday…  Has William really ever been in a relationship with Jecca?  Possibly.  Seriously?  I doubt it.  If the relationship had ever been serious, Clarence House would NOT have denied it.

Privatisation May Prevent Wills from Flying Search & Rescue Helicopters

Does this mean Wills will end up flying smaller choppers? Does this mean a need for a career change?  The end of RAF commitment?  Time to settle into kinghood? Finally marry Kate, anyone?

Prince William’s dream of building a career flying RAF Sea King helicopters could be in jeopardy because of privatization.

After 18 months of training in Sea King helicopters, William will be a fully qualifed chopper pilot by next June. He is due to join Search and Rescue after a 3-month tour of duty in the Falklands.  But to cut defence costs, the service is to be given to a private contractor.

The MoD said that the new contract would mean that only a “proportion” of military aircrew will be retained alongside civilian pilots.  It is still unknown what that proportion of military to civilian personnel will be until a contractor has finally been chosen.  The service will be scaled back at 3 out of 12 UK bases from 2012, which could scupper Wills’ plan to serve in the SAR until 2013.

A senior officer said: “I regret to say that it appears that Prince William will be among the first victims of the defence cuts. We hope to get him to the Falklands but the transfer to civilian contractors will impact on the appointments and we are unclear if we can ask HRH to fly a civvy cab with an RAF sticker on it. It is a terrible situation and nobody is happy. Sadly for the Palace, William will ensure that the demise of the service will get wide coverage. He will complete his course but may ultimately end up with nothing to fly.”

Emilia d’Erlanger is Engaged!

While Kate Middleton waits patiently for Prince William to propose, another one of her closest friends, Emilia d’Erlanger, has become engaged. The 27 year-old will marry David Jardine-Paterson, 28, next year, reports The Telegraph.

Now let’s dig deeper into the royals’ inner circle of friends…

Who is Emilia?

The youngest of 5 children, Emilia Mary Florence d’Erlanger has been linked to William in their late teens.  She first drew attention in 1999 when she joined Wills in a summer holiday cruise around the Greek Islands called the “love boat.”  Like Kate Middleton, she studied at Marlborough College and headed to either St. Andrews or Edinburgh University to read History of Art.  So is Emilia primarily Wills’ or Kate’s friend?  I guess the answer is both. She’s seems to have remained in their inner circle of trusted friends over the years, and was once photographed with Harry during a polo match in 2001.

During William & Kate’s brief split in 2007, Emilia accompanied Kate to Ibiza for a holiday.  Here’s a picture of them attending Lady Rose Windsor’s wedding in July 2008 (right).

Emilia co-owns the interior design company d’Erlanger and Sloan based in London.

Her fiance David Jardine-Paterson is scion of a Scots landed family.  Is he related to Pippa (Kate’s sister) Middleton’s ex JJ Jardine-Paterson?  Most probably!

So I guess the real tickler is: Now that their friends are starting to settle down, will William finally pop the question?  Don’t hold your breath just yet…

Living in Base’s Mess Next Year

William, 27, who is training to become a search and rescue pilot, will  live in the base’s mess when he transfers to RAF Valley in Anglesey, Wales.  He spent a month at RAF Valley improving his flying skills in July and will return next year when he will learn to fly a Sea King helicopter.  It will cost him £200 a month to stay in the old white building at the unglamorous  camp.

‘It is a bit like an old hotel,’ says an officer. ‘It has reasonable but not grand rooms. You can buy your own bed if you don’t like the one provided.’

His girlfriend Kate Middleton will be allowed to visit, but she has to ask for permission if she wants to stay over.

Working to Bring World Cup to England in 2018

Concerned by claims that the Football Association is not making great enough use of the Royal family in its efforts to bring the World Cup to England in 2018, Prince William has let it be known that he is keen to take on a more prominent role.
“He is very supportive of the bid and will do his part in whatever way the FA deems appropriate,” says a spokesman for the Prince, who took over as president of the sport’s governing body from the Duke of York in 2006.

“Prince William is heavily involved and will remain so until the winning bid is announced in December 2010.”

Wills & Harry Lunch in Norfolk Pub

Prince William and Prince Harry plus an unidentified male friend popped into the Dabbling Duck at Great Massingham, between Fakenham and King’s Lynn last Sunday (October 4).

“They seemed to enjoy their meals. They both had non-alcoholic drinks. I think Prince William had lemonade and Harry had a coke. They both had roast beef, I think.”

Royals Attend End of War in Iraq Commemoration

Today marks another day of work for the royals. During the End of War in Iraq Commemoration, Rowan Williams — an outspoken critic of Britain’s role in the war — told a congregation at St. Paul’s Cathedral that there are many lessons to be learned from the Iraqi conflict. Included in the audience were HM Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Gordon Brown, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, Iraq President Jalal Talabani, top British Military officers, veterans of the war and families of British soldiers killed in Iraq. Prince William also attended the service with his father, Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, along with Princess Anne and Prince Edward.

British troops completed their pullout from Iraq in May, ending a six-year campaign that saw 178 British servicemen and women and one civilian Ministry of Defense worker killed.
