The Queen, the Duke, with their young children - Prince Charles & Princess Anne

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II may be 84 but she still has plenty of byte – as she’s shown by joining the photo-sharing website Flickr.

The Queen has already uploaded more than 600 snaps, many of which are very rare, and she plans to write a frequently-updated diary of the Royal Family’s engagements.

The pictures include historic shots of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert from the early days of photography, plus the Queen as a child with her parents and in early royal duties.

The launch follows that of royal.gov.uk, the monarchy Twitter account in 2009 and the Royal Channel on YouTube in 2007.

A Palace statement said: “The Flickr photo site is the latest way the royal household is engaging with technological innovation.”

Queen Marks Birthday at Trooping the Colour Parade

The British Royal Family. Trooping the Colour 2010

The Queen has marked her 84th official birthday at the Trooping the Colour parade in central London.

She wore a light lilac outfit as she inspected rows of crimson-coated Guardsmen while the sun shone weakly over Horse Guards Parade.  The parade included more than 1,400 soldiers in the traditional uniforms of the Household Cavalry, Royal Horse Artillery and Foot Guards.

The Queen was accompanied on the short journey from Buckingham Palace by Prince Phillip, who underwent minor surgery on his left hand earlier this week.  Prince Charles also attended the ceremony despite suffering from a persistent chest infection and is scheduled to take three days off next week. He was accompanied the Duchess of Cornwall, who suffered a broken leg earlier this year and had the cast removed just two weeks ago

Also present were Princess Anne, and grandchildren Prince William, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

Prince Harry Set to Fly Apache; Earns Wings in Front of Beaming Chelsy

Beaming couple: Prince Harry & Chelsy Davy

Beaming couple: Prince Harry & Chelsy Davy

It was announced today that Prince Harry has decided to fly Apache attack helicopters. He also received his RAF wings from father Prince Charles, with beaming girlfriend Chelsy Davy as his guest. It was a day that vindicated his decision to go after one of the most demanding jobs in the Army, and into a path that will most likely see him back in combat in Afghanistan.

For his girlfriend Chelsy, it was a chance to show that she is back at the heart of the Royal Family – and happy to be there. The 24-year-old trainee solicitor looked glamorous in a chiffon mini dress and cream jacket. In a display of renewed confidence, she warmly kissed his father Prince Charles and wheelchair-bound stepmother the Duchess of Cornwall after the ceremony. Harry and Chelsy have split up several times during their six-year relationship but reunited last autumn.

Also present during the 40-minute ceremony at Middle Wallop, Hampshire, were the sisters of Harry’s late mother Princess Diana, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes and his former nanny Tiggy Legge Bourke (now Pettifer).

Prince Harry will start an eight-month conversion course in July followed by a further eight months tuition at RAF Wattisham in Suffolk to ensure he is ‘combat ready’. That means he could be back in Afghanistan by the end of 2011.

He has time off until July, and is likely to spent some time on holiday with Chelsy, who herself is on a “gap year” between school and starting her legal training as a solicitor in the fall.

Very well done, Harry!  May he continue to fly high and keep safe…

Camilla Breaks her Leg – But Life Goes On

Camilla breaks her leg

Camilla breaks her leg

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, slipped into a rabbit hole on April 7th near her Scottish retreat at Birkhall. An x-ray confirmed the extent of the injury the following day.

The Duchess – president of the National Osteoporosis Society – has a twisted fracture of the left fibula and is now in plaster.

Clarence House said: “While out walking in slippery conditions on Wednesday the Duchess took a tumble and hurt her leg. Following doctor’s advice yesterday she had an X-ray which showed a twisted fracture. She is wearing a plaster cast and will be for six weeks. She has been advised not to put weight on her leg.”

Camilla has vowed not to cancel any official engagements. On Friday, she and Prince Charles celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary.

The wedding secret Charles must take to his grave: Legal advice on Camilla marriage sealed until after his death

The Government was accused of a cover-up last night after it was ruled that the legal advice that enabled Prince Charles to marry the Duchess of Cornwall must remain secret until after his death.  Doubts about the legality of the wedding have long persisted, with some constitutional experts arguing that legislation prevented the couple from taking part in a civil ceremony.

The couple married five years ago after Lord Falconer overruled claims that members of the Royal Family were banned from marrying in a register office.

William & Kate News Bits (April 5, 2010)

Prince William & Kate Middleton have been dating since 2003

Prince William & Kate Middleton have been dating since 2003

As usual, wedding speculations…

Tina Brown, author of The Diana Chronicles, writes: “A high-placed source in royal circles tells me that two days in June have been mysteriously blocked out on the palace diaries—June 3 and 4. They suggest this is a likely date for the engagement announcement at last of the 27-year-old Prince William and his patient squeeze, 28-year-old Kate Middleton. If so, a wedding itself would probably follow in November, like the wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.”

“The palace has placed a £30,000 bulk order for vintage Dom Perignon. This usually only happens ahead of special occasions like weddings and family announcements. It suggests something big is coming up.”

Cost-Cutting Queen Wants to Slash Monarchy to Four

the Fab Four of the Royal Family?

the Fab Four of the Royal Family?

The Queen is wielding the axe to chop the monarchy down to a “fab four” – of herself, Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry. Her scheme is set to be phased in from June, when Princes William and Harry go on their first ever joint tour.
The slimmed-down line-up will see a cull of B-list royals, with the biggest losers being Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

It means taxpayers will not have to fork out so much for the family – and the Queen hopes it will also strengthen their public image.
