Privatisation May Prevent Wills from Flying Search & Rescue Helicopters

Does this mean Wills will end up flying smaller choppers? Does this mean a need for a career change?  The end of RAF commitment?  Time to settle into kinghood? Finally marry Kate, anyone?

Prince William’s dream of building a career flying RAF Sea King helicopters could be in jeopardy because of privatization.

After 18 months of training in Sea King helicopters, William will be a fully qualifed chopper pilot by next June. He is due to join Search and Rescue after a 3-month tour of duty in the Falklands.  But to cut defence costs, the service is to be given to a private contractor.

The MoD said that the new contract would mean that only a “proportion” of military aircrew will be retained alongside civilian pilots.  It is still unknown what that proportion of military to civilian personnel will be until a contractor has finally been chosen.  The service will be scaled back at 3 out of 12 UK bases from 2012, which could scupper Wills’ plan to serve in the SAR until 2013.

A senior officer said: “I regret to say that it appears that Prince William will be among the first victims of the defence cuts. We hope to get him to the Falklands but the transfer to civilian contractors will impact on the appointments and we are unclear if we can ask HRH to fly a civvy cab with an RAF sticker on it. It is a terrible situation and nobody is happy. Sadly for the Palace, William will ensure that the demise of the service will get wide coverage. He will complete his course but may ultimately end up with nothing to fly.”

Birthday Wishes

**Updated** Fergie celebrated her 5oth birthday with Beatrice, Eugenie, Prince Andrew, rumoured boyfriend Geir Frantzen, and friends Lisa Marie Presley, Tamara Beckwith and Sir David Frost.  On a side note: why can’t these York girls improve their wardrobe?

Sarah Ferguson (Fergie) turned 50 on October 15.  Instead of what’s supposed to be a huge celebration, we have stories that highlight her current financial situation.  Fergie has reportedly canceled her planned bash for 300 at Royal Lodge at Windsor amidst recent reports that she’s going bankrupt.  Instead, she’s settled for a dozen family members and friends, including ex-husband Prince Andrew and their daughters.

According to friends, Fergie’s problem is not so much her extravagance.  It’s her big heart and the fact that she flies places to help others.  She’s also had a series of bad investments.  She had already paid off the £4million debt she ran up after divorcing Prince Andrew.  Yet now, after losing her contracts with Weight Watchers, she’s mounting up the bills again.  In the past year, she has been taken to court by three firms over debts of £21,539.  Days ago, her New York media firm announced plans to shut with debts over £630,000.

Is Fergie a victim of circumstance, or a foolish girl who does not learn from past mistakes?  Given her track record, she’s perhaps someone spontaneous, and therefore tends to leap before she thinks.  Either way, Happy 50th, Fergie! You are, after all these years, still a breath of fresh air!

P.S.  Alexander Spencer-Churchill was also there!

**Updated** James Middleton and Guy Pelly were also at the event. According to Katie Nicholl, James – who owns the Cake Kit Company – was busily eyeing up the amazing spread of miniature desserts and Pippa looked lovely in a yellow dress that wasn’t Issa. ‘It’s old, actually I have no idea who it’s by, I found it in the back of my wardrobe,’ she says.

Harry & Chelsy’s Rekindled Love

Neil Sean of CBS has  yet more “insider” information regarding Harry and Chelsy’s reconciliation from so-called “friends.”  Because of the economic crisis, he also says the Africa trip this Christmas is wide off the mark.

Prince Harry is once again happy and in love, six months after splitting with “the love of his life,” Chelsy Davy.  But the path back to amorousness is not always smooth. Harry never actually wanted to split in the first place – both blamed it on the demands of his life in the military and her training as a lawyer in Leeds.

I knew that if I shut it down I would loose her for good,” Harry told friends. “It started off again like a brand new romance with calls, texts and silly things like cards being left for each other,” said a close contact.

Dinners and long walks followed, with both revealing why they wanted to try again. Harry is a different person now that she is back in his life, and the family (father Prince Charles, Camilla and brother Prince William) are also thrilled.

Chelsy did have some demands in the reunion. Among them, she wanted the young Prince to improve his punctuality, call when he says he was going to, and not take her for granted. She apparently vowed to reciprocate on many of the same points.

Emilia d’Erlanger is Engaged!

While Kate Middleton waits patiently for Prince William to propose, another one of her closest friends, Emilia d’Erlanger, has become engaged. The 27 year-old will marry David Jardine-Paterson, 28, next year, reports The Telegraph.

Now let’s dig deeper into the royals’ inner circle of friends…

Who is Emilia?

The youngest of 5 children, Emilia Mary Florence d’Erlanger has been linked to William in their late teens.  She first drew attention in 1999 when she joined Wills in a summer holiday cruise around the Greek Islands called the “love boat.”  Like Kate Middleton, she studied at Marlborough College and headed to either St. Andrews or Edinburgh University to read History of Art.  So is Emilia primarily Wills’ or Kate’s friend?  I guess the answer is both. She’s seems to have remained in their inner circle of trusted friends over the years, and was once photographed with Harry during a polo match in 2001.

During William & Kate’s brief split in 2007, Emilia accompanied Kate to Ibiza for a holiday.  Here’s a picture of them attending Lady Rose Windsor’s wedding in July 2008 (right).

Emilia co-owns the interior design company d’Erlanger and Sloan based in London.

Her fiance David Jardine-Paterson is scion of a Scots landed family.  Is he related to Pippa (Kate’s sister) Middleton’s ex JJ Jardine-Paterson?  Most probably!

So I guess the real tickler is: Now that their friends are starting to settle down, will William finally pop the question?  Don’t hold your breath just yet…

The Queen, Duke, the Theatre & Bollywood

The Queen & Duke Go to the Theatre

The Queen & Duke of Edinburgh

Never one to stand on ceremony, the Queen is taking informality to new levels.

On Monday, members of the audience at War Horse, at the New London Theatre, stood up to allow a couple to squeeze past to take their seats just before the curtain rose. They were amazed to discover that the couple apologising were the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. “When they left at the end, they were given a round of applause, which Her Majesty acknowleged with a wave,” says a journalist from The Lady who was present.

War Horse is an award-winning production based on the celebrated novel by Michael Morpurgo.  Set during the First World War, it is a tale of bravery, loyalty, and the extraordinary bond between a young recruit and his horse.

Bollywood Goes to Buckingham

Oh what I wouldn’t do to see HRH’s dance moves!

Bhangra and Bollywood came to Buckingham Palace as the Queen celebrated Britain’s Asian talent.

The monarch hosted a reception for Indian writers, actors, sportsmen and business people ahead of a state visit by the Indian President Pratibha Patil at the end of the month. Husband and wife Sanjeev Bhaskar and Meera Syal, the stars of the award winning BBC comedy show The Kumars at No 42, were among the guests treated to an extract of the hit show Bollywood Steps.  Performers from the dance group Nutkhut did a 15 minute extract from the show Bollywood Steps inspired by Indian movies.

The performance took place in the palace’s ballroom in the shadow of a 30ft domed red velvet canopy, used at the coronation Durbar, or court, of George V and Queen Mary in Delhi, India in 1911.
