First Official Portrait of William & Harry Unveiled

Painted by Nicky Philipps, a new portrait shows Princes William and Harry engaged in “brotherly banter” as they pose in the Library of Clarence House. Both wear the dress uniform of the Household Cavalry. Miss Philipps was commissioned and had five sittings with the Princes beginning in August 2008. She hopes to have captured “a behind-the-scenes glance at the human element of royal responsibility”

“I didn’t want any sort of overbearing formality about it because they are still young and William hasn’t got to his role yet. They are Army officers and they are brothers. Although I was commissioned to paint them in their official context, I hope I have also captured some of the brotherly banter that characterised the sittings.”

She also found the princes – who created their own poses – “charming, and tall. They were extremely easy to work with.”

The painting will be displayed for the next six months in London’s National Portrait Gallery’s Contemporary Galleries.

Kate & Chelsy Holiday with their Families

Even without their princes, paps have managed to snap holiday pictures of royal girlfriends Kate Middleton and Chelsy Davy.

Kate in Cornwall Over Christmas

Kate and her family spent their annual Christmas family holiday renting a cottage in Cornwall.  On Christmas day, they (Kate, mum Carole, siblings Pippa and James) were spotted enjoying a round of tennis.  This lays to rest any speculation that Kate might be in Sandringham on Christmas morning.  Kate was on the tennis team in Marlborough College, and the family is known to play regularly.  It’s good to see Kate letting her hair down (literally and figuratively). On a side note, it appears that they stayed in a cottage belonging to the Duchy of Cornwall (website here), Prince Charles’ estate.  Kate and Prince William reportedly spent the New Year in Birkhall.

Chelsy in Sunny Mauritius

Dated January 2, Chelsy was pictured with her dad Charles Davy in Tamarin Beach in Mauritius.  Looking great in her bikini, she was seen basking in the sun, paddling in nearby rock pools, enjoying a cigarette and chatting with her dad.  Prince Harry was not spotted, but is said to be on his way to join the family as previously reported.  Pictures/scans below thanks to the royal forums.

Prince William will NOT be “Shadow King”

Prince William has made it clear that he will not become “shadow king” and is instead determined to spend the next few years developing his military career.

It was previously reported from Daily Mail that Wills is being groomed to take on much of the Queen’s responsibilities, citing a treasury document which highlights his future role. But palace aides say that these documents are out of date and in fact prepared prior to William’s decision to be an RAF pilot in late 2008.

A spokesman for St James’s Palace told The Sunday Telegraph: “Prince William will not be a ’shadow king’ – the possibility is not even being considered. Over the next few years, Prince William will be concentrating primarily on a military career while also slightly increasing his patronages and the other interests that he pursues.”

Wills & Kate at Birkhall for New Year

So they didn’t go for either the sun or snow as previously rumoured. Instead, Prince William and Kate Middleton are back in Birkhall in Balmoral for a New Year retreat.  This time last year, they were also in this Scottish retreat, braving cold temperatures as Wills surprised Kate with a date in a fire-lit log cabin

A source told The Sun: “They loved the peace and quiet there last year and decided there was nowhere they’d rather be together. Any days they spend with each other are incredibly precious because of William’s busy career schedule, so they want to make sure that when he has time off, it is quality time.”

Surely, engagement rumors are swirling again.  Bookmakers have slashed engagement odds for 2010 after the Sandringham privacy implementation.  The couple are understood to have spent Christmas apart — with William at Sandringham and Kate with her family.

Prince William has completed his time in RAF Shawbury and is due to collect his wings this month.  Prince Charles is expected to attend the ceremony.  He passed his helicopter flying courses before Christmas.  It will be at least another 6 months of training before Wills becomes qualified as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot.

The Queen Shows No Sign of Letting up at 83

She may be approaching her 84th birthday, but the Queen is still carrying out official engagements at the rate of more than one a day. Figures compiled by the Daily Mail suggest that she conducted 375 visits, investitures and audiences in 2009 – two decades after most people her age retired.

The crown for “hardest working royal” once again goes to Princess Anne. Here are 2009’s numbers:

  • Princess Anne ———- 554 public engagements
  • Prince Charles ——— 540
  • Prince Andrew ——— 490
  • The Queen ————– 375
  • Prince William ———- 27
  • Prince Harry ———— 15

Harry & Chelsy to Meet Up for World Cup

A newly reunited couple, Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy are planning their 2010 activities.  Newspapers report that they are spending the New Year with Chelsy’s family in Mauritius.  Now it seems they plan to meet up for the World Cup in South Africa in June — just in time to celebrate their 5th anniversary.

Chelsy is said to take time off from her job for a year to travel the world – particularly  in Asia and Australia.  Harry, meanwhile, will spend most of 2010 in Middle Wallop in Hampshire completing his Army Air Corps training.

‘Chelsy can’t wait to start her travels in the New Year but she really wants to make sure she gets to see Harry as well,’ says a source.

Duncan Larcombe of The Sun has already reported last October that both Prince William and Prince Harry are going to the World Cup next year.
